„The Key is to Take That First Step! And Opportunities Will Come Along the Way. “ - Shorena Pataridze, winemaker

Hello,

I am Shorena Pataridze from the village of Abanoeti in the Ambrolauri region. Currently, and passionately, my pursuit is in viticulture and winemaking, despite my professional background in economics. It is with genuine gratitude that I share my journey, which has led me to establish a successful winery, all thanks to the GRETA project, supported by the European Union, Sweden, and Austria.

I first heard about the project through the local farmers' association. I received an email announcing the launch of a project that would include the Racha area. Intrigued, I studied the website of the project to find more details. As I familiarised myself with the project's objectives, I realised that it perfectly aligned with my future goals. I decided to try my luck. Following the published instructions, I submitted my application, completed all the required stages, ultimately won the competition, and became a project beneficiary.

Regarding the assistance I received, to sum it up in one word, it would be - "enormous!" I went through a challenging period, and without donors’ financial support, I wouldn't have been able to continue my work. The financial assistance the European Union, Sweden, and Austria provided was crucial in restoring my grandfather's vineyard. I acquired all the equipment for the vineyard and the cellar, including a tractor. It is worth noting that my needs were considered when selecting the equipment. By that, I mean I am personally involved in vineyard cultivation. For instance, when choosing equipment for treating the vineyard, a significant emphasis was placed on its lightweight design, making it convenient and user-friendly, especially for a woman like me.

Among Pataridze Rachuli's wines, the non-standard dry Khvanchkara, crafted from Alexandrouli and Mujuretuli grapes, is the most popular. To get the non-standard product, it was crucial to regulate the cellar temperature consistently. Initially, I had to rely on a wood stove to heat the cellar and stay awake throughout the night to monitor the temperature. However, thanks to the generous support of donors, I received an air conditioner, which ended my exhausting and sleepless nights.

Revised: I want to highlight the valuable assistance we received within the GRETA project. in the marketing department. Thanks to project funding, we underwent essential training and acquired priceless knowledge. Our export manager has significantly expanded our business, especially by securing international markets. By heeding advice and participating in international exhibitions, fresh horizons opened up within my work. All of this presents a fantastic opportunity for small entrepreneurs like us.

To summarise, I was at a crossroads, contemplating whether to continue my winemaking journey. Thanks to the support of the European Union, Sweden, and Austria, I not only persevered in my beloved craftwork but have now established one of the most successful wineries in the region with a production of 3,500 bottles, allowing me to access markets in five foreign countries.

The knowledge acquired through training and the experience garnered at exhibitions clearly defined the direction of my business. The timely assistance from the GRETA project also facilitated another grant from the Rural Development Agency.

By now, it should be evident why I used the word "enormous" at the beginning of my story. None of this would have been possible without relentless determination. I got up and started, and from my own experience, I strongly recommend that, regardless of your circumstances, the key is to take that first step! Along the way, opportunities will arise to help you achieve your goals.

I am prepared for new objectives and challenges and welcome contact via email at rachuli2015@gmail.com
